| The 2008 Xcel Pro Presented by Honolua is off for today, with the third and final day of competition likely to run later this week. With the holding period open through Monday, November 10, a new west swell is forecast for Sunset Beach and should produce 6' faces by Thursday or Friday. Still in the hunt for the 2008 Xcel Pro title are defending 2007 champion Joel Centeio, 2006 champion Evan Valiere, and a slew of top Hawaiians including Makua Rothman, Ola Eleogram, and three-time Xcel Pro winner Pancho Sullivan. Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, the Xcel Pro continues its tradition of kicking off the North Shore winter surf season, where young up-and-comers test their mettle at one of the toughest big-wave venues around. With a 4-Star ASP rating and deep local roots, the Xcel Pro draws mainland and international competitors, while staying true to its tradition as a prime opportunity for rising Hawaiian stars. Over 3/4 of the field remaining in this year's Xcel Pro are from Hawaii. The winner of the 2008 Xcel Pro will take home $10,000 and valuable late-year ASP WQS points heading into the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Day 3 action will begin with Heat 16 of Round 3, and will continue with all of Round 4, quarterfinals, semifinals, and the concluding final heat.
