SUNSET BEACH, HAWAII - NOVEMBER 6, 2006 - Competition has run halfway through the final day of the 2006 Xcel Pro Presented by No Fear, as the predicted WNW swell continues to produce 6 to 8 foot faces at Sunset Beach.
This year's champion will be decided later this afternoon, as the final heat is expected to paddle out at 3:30 PM HST. Results and live updates can be found at the official contest Web site, http://xcelpro.xcelwetsuits.com.
Early competitors took advantage of good conditions on the outside Sunset break, helped by a light offshore breeze that picked up into the early afternoon.
Plenty more action is expected through the day, as 2005 Xcel Pro defending champ Ian Walsh and other top surfers Jamie O'Brien, Gavin and Shane Beschen, South Africa's Jordy Smith, and Australian Daniel Ross so far have secured their places in the quarterfinals. Finalists will surf for valuable Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) points, and a share of the $75,000 purse - the largest offered in the 23-year history of the Xcel Pro.
SurfingLive.com will continue its live Webcast, available at http://xcelpro.xcelwetsuits.com, through the finals and championship ceremony following the last heat.
